The Avery is woven from 100% Japanese glazed paper — a tight weave with a subtle sheen. The Natural colorway shows that weave more plainly than the Camel does, since there's less pigment sitting on top of it, and the low glaze catches light across the crown. Soft straw slumps and softens with wear. This holds its crown, keeps a sharp pinch at the front, and stays light through a long afternoon. Four eyelets above the band vent warm air out of the crown instead of letting it pool.
A brim that earns its keep
Two and a half inches. Wide enough to put your face and the back of your neck in shade when the sun is high, narrow enough that it still reads as a fedora rather than a beach hat. That's the range where a sun hat stops being purely functional and becomes part of the outfit — the reason it turns up on golf courses, hotel terraces and at outdoor weddings in roughly equal measure.
UPF 50+
The fabric is rated UPF 50+ and blocks 97.5% of ultraviolet rays, per the Australian Radiation Protection Agency the UV bounces off sand, water and pavement and reaches skin from below, so a hat is one layer of sun protection rather than the whole of it. Within its own job, this fabric does it about as well as fabric can.
